The Student
Night and Day the Illui* pores o'er musty shelves.E'en his Master dreads the mystery he delves, And really fears him !Night and day the Illui shuns the human rote ;Flesh becometh weaker, voice a weazened note, And nothing stirs him.

[AFTER FRISCHMAN]
Daily comes a maiden fair, Eyes so radiant, smile so rare,— Not to him ! Daily comes the maiden fair Enquireth of his Master there— Will but know, if right or wrong, This or that, or smile or song; But the Illui?—fears him !
Eyes are deeper, flesh is weaker, Sadly droops the knowledge seeker. Lips so blue, the Angel Death Warmeth with his silent breath.
