Leonard Lewisohn
THE above is a good likeness of the late Leonard Lewisohn who died in the month of March thisyear. Mr. Lewisohn in his lifetime was a munificent philanthropist, who used his wealth in an admirable way to relieve the immediate distress of his fellow Jews. He was born in Hamburg in 1848, and came to this country when sixteen years of age as agent for his father in the feather business. Soon after arrival he asked his brother to join him and the firm of Lewisohn Brothers was established. It was in the metal business, however, that the firm made its greatest success, soon becoming known as the largest dealers in copper. He was the active agent in the consolidation of the mining interests of the country. The gifts Mr. Lewisohn gave to the various charities are too numerous to mention. His hand was always open to the wants of his co-religionists. He left nine children, his wife having died two years. He was an orthodox Jew.
