Like as the Sand*
L O! moon and stars—their argent glory gleaming O'er hill and vale the wings of night unfold. In the ancient Book before me open—dreaming I read the word, yea, read a thousandfold.
I read the words of holy Covenant, I read— Meseems I hear a voice speak loud to me: “Like the stars of heaven, Israel! thy seed Will be, and like the sand beside the sea.”
All-reigning Master! naught, I know, will fail Of all Thy promises unto Thy people's race. Lord, Thy will divine doth evermore prevail— All things see light in their own time and place.
And one thing now I see fulfilled—e'en now, (Doubt not its truth—is not my vision sound?) We are “like as the sand” crushed deep and low, Yea, trampled like the dust upon the ground.
Like sand and stone, yea, Lord, Thy people are— Despised and scattered—scorned, cast away; But the heaven's stars, the bright refulgent stars— The stars, the stars, where are, I say?
