THE answer that Friedrich received from the N. O. Body newspaper advertisement contained the address of a first-class hotel on the Ringstrasse as the place for an interview. At the appointed time Friedrich entered the hotel and inquired for Mr. Kingscourt. 'He was shown to a chamber on the first floor. As he entered, a tall, broad-shouldered man approached him. "You are Dr. Löwenberg?"
“I am.”
"Sit down, doctor."
They sat down. Friedrich studied the personality of his vis-a-vis and waited for an explanation. Mr. Kingscourt was a man of about fifty, with a full beard streaked with gray, a head of brown hair in which the silver had made its appearance and the tell tale shimmer was more noticeable on the temples. He leisurely smoked a big cigar.
"Do you smoke, doctor?"
"Not just now," Friedrich answered.
Mr. Kingscourt blew a ring of smoke into the air and slowly watched it dissipate in the ceiling, and only when it had entirely disappeared he said, not looking at his guest, "Why are you tired of life?"
