with one voice. "There cannot have been such a false verdict in this world. The truth must arise as oil upon water. What, you think you can tell us lies?"
"Fools!" cried Siedel with all his might and he pushed the paper in their faces. "Fools! See what is written in the newspaper!"
"Why, the newspaper!" cried Cathrielevke. "If you stood there with one leg 'n heaven and the other on earth, do you think we would believe you? It's an utter impossibility. It cannot be! It cannot be! No!"
And so it has remained until this day.
The Consecration of Isaiah.
R OSY smiles suffused the cloudlets And the downy dew-drops frail, And the peaks of royal mountains, And the roses of the vale.
Zephyrs whispered wooingly Adorations to the grove And the birds and brooks and fountains Hailed the dawn with songs of love.
And the flowers swung their censers, Filled with balm and perfume sweet, Not a fern but with mirthful, Beaming eyes the morn did greet.
And the billows glowed with passion In the rising sun's domain; Not a fish or worm but quivered Thrilled and quivered with Life's strain.
Golden bliss of golden beamings, Like new wine, made mankind glad; Worlds in love and gladness revelled, Yet the Prophet's face was sad.
Not on heaven looked the seer, Nor on blooming, flowery earth; "I am living with a people Of no purity, no worth."
So, in wrath, the Prophet murmured, And he could not move men’s souls; But the Lord of Love and Mercy, From Love’s altar took live coals.
Touched the lips of rapt Isaiah, Touched his stern lips and wan, And thenforth they sang and burned, Burned and sang with love of man.
