must be done before the community can perform all the necessary social functions. Whether it be an Old People's Home, a Zionist organization, or a literary society, one and all must be benefited
in so small measure by the rousing into activity of the best and strongest philanthropic forces and thought of the great and rapidly growing Chicago Jewish community.
Our Resources
QUR leader is dead, but his spirit is alive. He realized that the salvation of our nation lies in the resources which can be utilized to regain our national domination. For that purpose, our grand leader, Dr. Theodor Herzl, was like Napoleon Bonaparte, who said, "In war we need three things: Money, money and money." Our grand leader realized it, and therefore he founded the Jewish Colonial Trust, then he organized the National Fund, which I think are the proper weapons by which we can regain our sacred land.
But time has dealt with our nation in a very severe way, and we cannot tax individuals to contribute to the remedy of our national relief; so I suggest a very simple plan by which the individual will not lose and the nation will gain.
It should be the duty of the next Congress to formulate a plan for getting all the resources required for the high and noble aim of our nation, and of our great leader.
I suggest that all the contracts of engagements shall be taxed, as well as the dowry contracts, which shall be printed with Zionistic emblems. There are many resources from which we can draw millions to realize the dream of our seers,
poets and dreamers, as well as our practical people, who are looking for a home.
Let the next Congress decree that in each cemetery of the Diaspora, during the month Ellul, when the pilgrimages to the graves of our beloved departed commence, a plate shall be placed with the inscription, "For the National Fund." Let Congress, with the co-operation of all the rabbis, decree that on each New Year's Day a plate shall be placed with the same inscription in each place of worship. Then we should make the day of the Rejoicing of the Law, when every Jew is called up to read a few lines of the Law, a day of Shekel donations for the holy purpose of our National Fund. Let the union of Zionism take into its hands all the rubric business, as the sale of the Ethrogim, the talismans for confinement, etc., and in one year we will accumulate much money which will stand as a lasting monument to our beloved dead leader, and we will be able to realize his dream of a Jewish State.
Mohammed called us the People of the Book, while the Gentiles call us a practical nation. Let us merge our both qualities into one, and let us go to work for the time of dreaming is gone, it is a time to act, and we must not lose the opportunity.
