The Zion Flag at St. Louis
This short letter is prompted by my viewing the beautiful Zionist flag which is now proudly waving over several of the leading Exposition Buildings, side by side with those of all the other nations of the earth. Immediately on arriving on the Fair Grounds, I asked to be shown the Zion flag. My friend and brother Zionist, Michael Stiffelman, generously offered to take me to the several places where the flags are waving in the October breezes, thrilling and filling with joy the breast of all-loyal Zionist beholders. I stood and gazed chained to the spot, scarcely believing and my own eyes hardly realizing that the flag of Zion is a reality, floating over the grounds of the world's greatest Fair, saying, as it were, to the inhabitants of all the earth: "Lo' the Jews are a nation and this is the nation's symbol. Let skeptics and doubters cease to doubt Zionism is a living reality!"
I can not and do not wish to, while writing about the flag, omit mentioning brother Stiffelman, who was chiefly instrumental in inducing the Exposition
Management to recognize the Zionist proudly waves and bears testimony to a living, throbbing, pulsating Zionism. Mr. M. Stiffelman is entitled to the gratitude of every Zionist in the land and deserves to be honorably mentioned in the editorial pages of the Maccabean. I trust in the next issue the Maccabean will make editorial mention of the Zionist flag at the St. Louis Fair and credit Mr. Stiffelman with the successful placing of the flag over the great exhibit buildings.
It floats over the Machinery, Varied Industries, Manufactures, Electricity, Education' Agriculture and the Liberal Arts Buildings. The flags are large and handsome. They are conspicuously displayed and are easily seen from many points. One can even see it on the way to Jerusalem (in miniature).
The Exposition, from what I have seen in the short time I have been here, is colossal and magnificent. The absence of a Palestinian exhibit is, of course, to be regretted. Let us hope the next International Exhibition will have a Zion exhibit as a leading feature. Let us hope to one day have an exposition of our own in our own soil, by our own people. Amen.
