The Council of Western Zionists
The following is a brief account of the second convention of the Council of Western Zionists:
President Fribourg called the convention to order on Sunday evening, September 25th, in Goldhammer’s Hall, in the city of Denver. Twenty-four delegates were seated, representing the Bnai Zion of Denver, Dorshei Zion, Junior Bnai Ziön, Bnoth Zion, Bnai Zion Sher- ıtlı Israel and Buds of Zion. This number also included the officers of the Council. President Fribourg appointed a committee consisting of Dr. C. H. Kauvar, Mr. Jacob Tannenbaum and Mr. Friedman to draw up proper resolutions on the death of our late leader, Dr. Theodor Herzl. The President then raised the question of continuing or discontinuing the Council of Western Zionists, and invited action and discussion by the delegates, whereupon Dr. Chas. H. Kauvar made a motion that the Council established a year ago continue in existence. A very warm discussion then took place on this motion, and opinions were ably delivered by Dr. C. H. Kauvar, President Fribourg, Mr. D. B. Kobey, Mr. Jacob Tannenbaum, Mr. Maurice Block and Mr. Friedman. President Fribourg then granted a recess of five minutes for private consultation between the delegates of the various societies. At the end of the five minutes the President called the meeting to order again, and a roll call vote was taken, with the result that all the delegates voted unanimously to continue the Council and pledged themselves to work for it faithfully from now on. Nominations for officers were then begun. Dr. C. H. Kauvar and Mr. Tannenbaum were nom-
inated for President, but both declined. President Fribourg then nominated Secretary Friedman for the office of President, which was seconded by Dr. Kauvar, Mr. Friedman was elected by acclamation. The other officers practically elected by acclamation are: Vice-Pres., Phillip Quiatkowsky; Rec.-Secretary, H. Mendelsohn; Financial Secretary, Maurice Block; Treasurer, Samuel Disraelly.
The future scheme of organization will be as follows, and will have to be accomplished by means of the Executive Board: Committees of three will be appointed on Organization, Education, National Fund, Colonial Trust and Entertainment. Within two weeks these committees will be actively working in the field. At the conclusion of the elections, President Fribourg in an able address installed the new President, Mr. Friedman and President Friedman then, in a few brief, earnest words, explained to the newly-elected officers their duty, and installed them in their respective offices. Mr. Fribourg moved that the Executive Board be empowered to draw up by-laws for the government of the Council; his motion carried. President Friedman then instructed the various societies represented to immediately take out charters from the Federation of American Zionists, through the Financial Secretary of the Council.
There being no further business to come before the Convention, Dr. C. H. Kauvar gave the assembly his benediction, and then the President declared the convention at an end, and adjourned it sine die.
