In MDemoriam.
He dreamt, he found, and gave the world a light.
That light, the world illumined by its fires,His soul became that light, consuming him therein.
What though the world’s relentless hatred, day by day Tore his immortal heart.
What though the flames of scorn burned his eyes,What though a mountain's stone, the weight of centuries' hate,Weighed upon his mind and heart;
Yet he climbed blind pathways through the strangling night,
He cut through jungles of untold growth,And, with the courage of a Titan,
He had seized and kept till death a light.
We know how fiercely and alone
He endured and bore the countless things, The man endured, endured and won.
He won by his gift of a soul’s great strength. He won by the fealty of a million hearts.
The truth is long, and last, and best,For it he lived with bruised, defenceless breast,
And so he lived and died and died. The night, the silence, the solitude,
Left him magnificent and unconquered still.In solitude and darkness and great pain,
His soul was deep with great immensities. His words came back to us like stars
After the storm. We saw the light and we knew that he had won.
