in their political strikes. If this be so, what a terrible whirlwind is the Czar's government reaping for its past folly! The Jews whom it would have exterminated, are now shaking the throne of the Romanoffs. We see it totter and the poor little king upon it wildly clutching this way and that to save himself.
Play for Chanukah.
Many societies are clamoring for a Chanukah play. Some of them have asked for Tschirikow's "The Jews," which they wish to play. Others have asked for plays about Judas Maccabaeus. We admit that we have been unable to satisfy the wants of our societies in this respect. We have no good Jewish play in English fit for representation by amateur actors. Longfellow's "Judas
Maccabaeus" is not a good drama, although it serves the purpose of a play. There is a play on Judas Maccabaeus in German, which has never been translated into English; so that cannot be used. A children's play on Judas Maccabaeus, entitled "For Liberty," has been written by Miss Janowitz; but that, evidently, is too elementary for the purpose of our societies. The Yiddish plays that are fit for Chanukah production have never been translated into English; and it would cost too much to make a translation especially for this season. We are compelled, therefore, to ask the societies who have inquired about this matter to do the best they can this year; and we shall try to do whatever we can the next year in order to meet these demands.
EVERY month the Editors and Publisher are asked how can the reader help the MACCABAEAN. This interest is natural, whatever its age or standing. Because owned and popularly controlled Jewish publication in the United States.
We have to-day more regular subscribers than any other Jewish publication four years of age; more probably than any Jewish publication, weekly or monthly, published in the English language in America, whatever its age or standing. Because the magazine is issued at a low price we are always in need of more subscribers.
Here is a little fact that should appeal to our friends. If the MACCABAEAN were published weekly at the average price of the Jewish weekly, it would take half our subscription list to make it a profitable venture.

The MACCABAEAN will save you money and provide you with a much more generous announcement: wherever there are Zionists there are readers of the MAccABAEAN, so you may be sure your advertisement will reach the eyes of your friends.
