comment upon every misdeed of an organization as well as of the good done by an organization. You will find enclosed in this letter a postal distributed by the order Knights of Zion and a clipping of the Daily Jewish Courier, written by the grand master of the Order and editor of the Courier, Leon Zolot- kof, where he tries to persuade the readers that possess shares of the Jewish Colonial Trust that they must vote against the alteration of the statute, for the ITO is the one that wants to have the statutes changed.
JULIUS KATZOF.
The facts are as stated by Mr. Katoff. Instructions have been issued advising Zionists to oppose alterations in the statutes of the Jewish Colonial Trust, and an editorial does appear in the Chicago Daily Jewish Courier, in which an argument is presented to Zionists against altering the scope of the Trust.
Jewish Colonial Trust
The result of the vote of the shareholders of the Jewish Colonial Trust in the matter of the proposed change of the statutes of the bank, is now made known by Die Welt.
The report shows that 12,000 stockholders of the bank, representing over 40,000 shares, have voted in favor of changing the statutes. The vote against the proposed change represents only 2,000 stockholders for 6,000 shares. The proposed change, as it is now known, is intended to restrict the operations of the Jewish Colonial Trust to Palestine and its adjacent countries. This is in accordance with a decision of the Seventh Zionist Congress. Opposition to this change of the statutes has been promoted and brought into the English courts by Mr. Zangwill and other shareholders who are identified with the Territorialist movement. The result of the vote of the shareholders will now settle the matter.
Death of Jehudah Steinberg
On the 10th of March, Jehudah Steinberg died in Odessa from a cancer in the stomach. With his death the Hebrew and Yiddish literature sustained a blow from which it will not recover so soon.
He was born about forty years ago in Lipkoni, Bessarabia, Russia. His father was a Chassid, extremely religious, and very poor. He studied the Talmud until about seventeen years of age, when he betook himself to the Haskolah, against the objection and protest of his zealous father. To turn him from his studies, his father married him to a Roumanian girl. His father-in-law promised him a handsome dowry, but gave him nothing. He became a Hebrew teacher, and, like all Hebrew teachers, he made a poor living. About thirteen years he began to write Hebrew books and for the Hebrew press, and soon became popular. His first work was a book, now out of print, under the name “Niv Sfosayim,” a sort of composition book. He was a voluminous writer, and wrote many stories and sketches, particularly for the young. His style is clear, forcible and modern. His writings are marked with feeling and poetical fancy.
For about ten years he lived with his family in Lyova, Bessarabia. The massacres in Russia, and the Russian Government having outlawed the Hebrew press, he moved about three years ago to Odessa, where, he thought, he would find a better field for his profession of Hebrew teacher and where he could give his children a better education. His hopes to improve his condition were not realized, and he died in great poverty. About a year and a half ago he became correspondent of several Yiddish papers in New York, and would have made a living and could have continued his work in Hebrew, but he fell sick with the malady from which he died, after all the exertions of his friends to save his life. He leaves a wife and five children.
