They clambered up eagerly, and expected to find the world enveloped in darkness—darkness as gloomy and foreboding as that from which they had just emerged. But the street was lighted up, people were walking to and fro, and it seemed as if it were quite early. And when they reached the paved streets, and one of them glanced at the clock, they found that it was not yet eight. Then they turned to Bennie.
"I say," said Nate Smith, "Bennie ain't a bad kid. I don't see why, because his father is mean, that we ought to keep him in the dark alone all night. Let's take him with us."
Bennie stood by, hardly appreciating that he had been in such great danger. The opinion of the gang was that some other way should be found for the punishment of Komizsarsky.
"It was not fair to treat a little feller like Bennie so roughly."
And, as they walked home, they found a good subject of discussion in the deposition of Aleck as leader of the gang. But they never after thought of maltreating Komizsarsky, who, of his own accord, soon folded his tent and, like an Arab, silently went away, seeking a better field and a more pliable set of youngsters. The day following the return of the boys from the woods—and they boasted ever after that they had passed a night in the woods—Bennie met Joey and quickly ran to meet him.
"Ain't you goin' to tell me what happened to the man with the cap that made it so that nobody could see him?"
Joey sat down on Bennie's stoop and told him the story. There was no use bearing any grudge against Bennie, who, dirty as he was, had such a fine appreciation of Joey's talent as a story-teller.
THE NEXT CONVENTION
The Executive Committee has decided, at a meeting held on Saturday evening, May 3, that the next Annual Convention of the Federation of American Zionists shall be held in
ATLANTIC CITY, N. J.
from JULY 10th to JULY 15th.
The Headquarters of the Convention will be the
NEW LIBERTY HOTEL.
Societies are urgently requested to proceed to the election of delegates. Information regarding the hotel rates, railroad fares, accommodations in general will be given by the Federation office.
LOUISVILLE, KY.
The Zionist movement in Louisville is growing apace. A new organization, the Junior Zion Society, has been organized and already has a membership of close to one hundred. The new organization consists of young people of the high school age and bridges over the gap between the Sons and Daughters of Zion and the Herzl Children, the youngest Zionist body. Thus the movement in Louisville now numbers among its supporters members ranging all the way from eight years to fourscore.
The aims of the new society are social and literary. Papers will be read and debates held on questions or subjects of current Jewish interest, at the meetings which are held every other Sunday. The constitution provides for an equal expenditure of the society's funds on social and Zionistic activities
