IN MEMORY OF ALEXANDER COHEN
In the recent death of Alexander Cohen, a student of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, the Zionist movement as well as the cause for Hebrew education in this country, have lost an ardent worker. In recognition of his services to the Jewish cause, a memorial meeting was held in his honor under the joint auspices of the M'phitzay Spath Eber, M'phitzay Zion Circle and the Morias Blumenthal Society of the Seminary, on Saturday evening, June 13, at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Prof. S. Schecter, Dr. J. L. Magnes, Mr. J. Sprayregen, and others spoke.
New Yiddish Magazine
A society known as “Neue Leben,” composed of friends of Dr. Chayim Schitlowsky and sympathizers with the ideas he has been expressing on the East Side for several years, has been organized in New York City. The general committee is composed of Dr. A. .Ginsberg, I. Globus, Dr. H. Solataroff, M. Leonteff, H. Mindlin, I. Napelbaum, A. Eva- lenko, Dr. P. Kaplan and M. Katz. The society will undertake the promotion of scientific, philosophie and bellettristic literature in the Yiddish language. As a first step in this direction, it will publish a monthly magazine under the editorship of Dr. C. Schitlowsky. The magazine will be known as Dos Neue Leben, and the first number will appear in October. The treasurer of ihe society is Dr. J. A. Maryson, 250 East Broadway.
Zion Choral Society
The newly formed Zion Choral Society of New York, under the leadership of Cantor Bernard Wladowsky, and of Mr. Schneider, will make its first public appearance on the occasion of a memorial meeting to honor the memory of the late Dr. Theodore Herzl, which will be held on Saturday evening, July 18, in the auditorium of the Educational Alliance. The entire choir of thirty persons will be heard in vocal Zionist music suitable for the occasion. A number of prominent persons will address the meeting.
The Kadimah of New York
The spirit of activity has taken a hold of the members of the B’nai and B’noth Zion Kadimah of New York just at the time when work of all kinds relaxes. It has elected a strong executive committee for the ensuing six months: Mr. Sam Kaimer, president; Miss Minnie Weinstein, vice-president; Mr. David A. Segall, corresponding secretary; Mr. H. It meets at 106 Forsyth street every Thursday evening and has arranged open literary meetings for every second Thursday. Its meetings are visited by an immense gathering of Zionist enthusiasts and sympathizers, and they are repaid by good Zionist addresses and other entertaining features.
The Literary Junior Branch, an organization of girls, all of whom are school graduates of the ages ranging between fifteen and seventeen years, continues under its supervision for the last three years. Their program of work is thoroughly Zionistic and edifying in character. They meet every Sunday afternoon at 106 Forsyth street.
The meetings of the Literary Junior Branch of the B’nai and B’noth Zion Kadimah consist of lectures and talks on Zionism, debates on different phases of the movement, lectures on the Bible according to modern conception and in relation to Zionism, add reading of especially prepared compositions by members of the branch on various Jewish and Zionist characters. The branch is the very first of its kind organized in New York and it is hoped that they will always serve as a model, not only to junior, but also to senior organizations. Much credit for their excellent work is due to their able director, Mr. Osios Nathanson, who is with them since their installation.
The annual convention of the Zionists of the State of Connecticut was held at New Haven on Sunday evening, June 28. A feature of the proceedings was an address by the Rev. A. M. Radin, of New York.
A new society known as the Degel Zion which has recently been organized in Wilmington, N. C. has applied for afhliation with the Federation of American Zionists.
A new society called the Sons and Daughters of Zion has been organized in Houston, Texas.
