tioned which interests American Jews. Mme. Buchmil has come to this country to further the petition idea. A special committee has been formed which will have charge of her tours in the United States. She will not appeal to any one party in Jewry, but will address herself to all Jews who are interested in the future of Palestine and the greater usefulness of the Hirsch funds. When the subject of Mme. Buchmil's tour was discussed at the meeting of the executive of the Federation of American Zionists, it was said that, while the Federation is interested in the diversion of the Hirsch millions to Palestine, it does not feel inclined to endorse the proposition of th "Shiloh" owing to the fact that the scheme has not received the approval of the Actions Comite.
At the annual conference of the English Zionist Federation, Dr. Moses Gaster was elected president and Mr. L. J. Greenberg vice-president. Dr. Gaster subsequently resigned as president in view of the election of Mr. Greenberg as one of the vice-presidents, and several members of the executive committee followed suit. The duty devolved on Mr. Greenberg to call together the executive committee. The meeting was held and Dr. Gaster, Murray Rosenberg, secretary, Drs. Daiches and Weitzmann and Alderman J. Moser tendered their resignations, which were not accepted. It was decided not to fill the vacancies and to call a special meeting of the central committee to consider the matter. In the meantime the Federation will take up energetic work on behalf of the Shekel and the National Fund.
The director of the Bezalel school in Jerusalem wishes us to inform the public that the school has its full complement of pupils and that no more can be received. No student should leave for Palestine with the hope of securing admission, without first making inquiries.
In the Biblioteca Warszawska, Prof. Aszkenazy, of Lemberg, gives a number of details concerning the first Polish Zionists. The first Polish Zionist was one Plonski, who lived at the beginning of the 19th Century. He went to Palestine and carried on a lively correspondence with his Polish friends, in which he treated of the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. But his letters were seized, and when he returned to Poland, he was arrested, thrown into prison, and since that day was never heard of.
In spite of the decision of the Court of Cassation in the matter, a number of Roumanian provincial tribunals continue to enforce the oath More Judaico. Rabbi Taubes, of Jassy, was recently fined for refusing to be sworn in that form.
Russia has placed its new bond issue in France. A member of the Socialistic party objected in the Chamber of Deputies to the connivance of the republic in the despotism of Russia, and referred to the fact that the bonds would furnish the Russian government with means to pave the way for further massacres of the Jews. When it came to a vote, four Jewish members voted with the majority, siding with the Russian government.
It is reported that the Alliance Universelle Israelite is assisting financially the New Arabic bank, lately founded in Jerusalem, as rival of the Anglo-Palestine bank. It is said that representatives of the Alliance have openly declared that they have no sympathy with financial institutions established in Palestine by Zionists. Prominent Englishmen will celebrate the opening of a Turkish Parliament with a dinner to be given in London. Among the signers to the circular are, Lord Rothschild, Sir Edward Sassoon and E. D. Stern.
