THE MACCABAEAN is issued by the Federation of American Zionists through a publishing corporation. It is published on the fifth of every month. All articles, translations, etc., have been specially contributed to THE MACCABAEAN.

Subscribers are requested to note the markings on the wrappers in which they receive their copies of THE MACCABAEAN. The date of the expiration of your subscription is marked on the wrapper. Please note it and do not let your subscription lapse, or compel us to write concerning it.

MANUSCRIPT.—All matter submitted for publication should be sent to the Editorial Department. News items should be brief, compact, legibly written in ink on one side of the paper, preferably in English, and of general interest. All matter must be sent by the fifteenth of the month to appear in the next current number.

APPEAL FOR NATIONAL FUND

The great national Fast Day, Tisha b' Ab, falls this year on July 27th. In accordance with our custom, the week of the Fast Day has been set aside as a fitting time to put forth an increased effort on behalf of the Jewish National Fund.

To us Zionists, Tisha b' Ab as the anniversary of the greatest calamity in our history, which finds us still clinging tenaciously to our national ideal, is a day that must serve as an inspiration for united effort for the reconstruction of our nation. The hope of our people must find expression in a revived national spirit and the building up of a great Jewish National Fund. By it and through it, we hope Zionists throughout the country will show the strength of their loyalty to the cause.

This Committee asks the societies everywhere to set aside the week of Tisha b'Ab beginning Sunday July 25th and ending Saturday, July 31st, as collection days for the National Fund. The Committee urges that a house to house canvass be made, and that funds be gathered at Zionist meetings during these days. The Committee asks further that on the Saturday following the Fast Day, Shabbath Nachmu, all synagogues and members of congregations be requested to allow free-will offerings, or, at least, a part of them, subscribed at the reading of the Torah, to be set aside for the Jewish National Fund.

We call upon Zionists to stir themselves to renewed and greater activity during the coming year to make the contribution of American Jewry to the National Fund worthy of our great community.
