this envoy, foreshadowing what I believed would be the position of Herzl. Two difficulties I saw ahead. The Young Turks desired that the Zionists should keep aloof from the Sultan (Abdul Hamid). They feared that he would listen to Herzl and by accepting his ideas, rehabilitate himself in the eyes of the world. I knew Herzl's temperament would not brook indefinite delay and suggested this possible obstacle to any alliance. The other difficulty, to my thinking, was still more serious. There are still reasons for not publishing it and it was strong enough to have balked Herzl twice and it had nothing to do with money or personalities and it still plays a vital part in the struggles in the East.
The writer communicated these interviews to our leader, received his cable approval, and finally prepared the details
for the envoy's interview with Herzl. Our interesting talk lasted till his luggage was packed in a cab. With my hand on the door knob, I said: "And when do you think the Young Turks will triumph?"
He answered laconically, "Probably in ten years—maybe twenty."
"And you want to negotiate so far ahead?"
"Ahead!" he exclaimed, sitting bolt upright in the cab. "Ten years ahead is tomorrow in the history of a nation. You westerners are all impatience, we Turks measure history by lifetimes. And this is a thing a man must give the full length of his life to accomplish. Come to Jerusalem. Good bye."
And then the cab drove away over the asphalt and I had to return to a task where the very minutes counted.
