The Maccabaean

The Hoachoozo-Palestine Land and Development Company was organized by St. Louis Zionists in October, 1908, and incorporated under the laws of the State of Missouri, in April, 1909. The object of this company is to buy for every one of its shareholders a tract of land in Palestine and improve same by planting olive and almond trees. The land will be developed by the company and taken care of as a whole, till the trees begin to bear fruit, when it will be parcelled and allotted to its shareholders, every one getting his own fruit bearing garden bor grove in accordance with the number of shares he holds.

The value of each share is $200, payable in 40 quarterly installments of $5.00 each, so that at the expiration of ten years the sum of $200 will be fully paid up.

We shall plant for each share sold, from 8 to 10 dunams of olive and almond trees and the owner of 5 shares and upwards, will have quite a considerable income after maturity, an income which will suffice for his livelihood in Palestine.

We now have about 90 shareholders, 40 of whom hold 5 shares each, and upwards, 30 own one share each, and about 20 members hold from 2 to 5 shares each. Although we have sold 400 shares, amounting to the sum of Eighty Thousand Dollars ($80,000., we will purchase land in 1910, and have already made a deposit of the sum of $5,000 for that purpose with the Anglo-Palestine Co., Jaffa.

The establishment of this colony is intended to demonstrate that capital can be invested in Palestine and made to yield splendid results, from a purely business

standpoint. The planting of olive and almond trees is always a very profitable undertaking, and this is especially so in Palestine, the home of the olive and the almond. It, however, takes about ten years for these trees to mature, hence fruit growers generally do not plant many of them, and in consequence, the market is never overstocked, and the profits derived from almond and olive groves are always very large.

The foremost question of the hour in Zionist circles is the raising of sufficient funds for the immediate purchase of land in Palestine (see the article "Congress and Its Work," by B. Blitz in Die Welt, of September 28th), and the establishment of "Achusas" is the only practicable scheme whereby sufficient money can be raised for land purchase and development.

In order to substantiate this assertion it is only necessary to emphasize the remarkable 'success the “Hoachoozo” has met with during the 12 months of its existence. While it has taken the National Fund several years to accumulate a few hundred thousand dollars from all over the world, a handful of Zionists in one city have subscribed to the Hoachoozo EIGHTY THOUSAND DOLLARS ($80,000.), in a twelvemonth, and have backed their subscriptions with the payment of four quarterly .instalments. The reason is self-evident. The National Fund and other Zionistis institutions afford no DIRECT benefit to the contributor and therefore they lack the PERSONAL incentive which alone is powerful enough to draw considerable sums from any individual, whereas the “Hoachoozo” members are convinced that they are making an investment from which THEY THEMSELVES will derive the great-
