The Russian revolution has evaporated,and what is left is the sediment of unworthy demoralization, which the destruction of the revolutionary hopes has broughtin its wake. Where formerly idealismreigned supreme, and men and womenwere eager to give up their lives for a cause,the leading thought now is personal enjoyment, dissipation, and an unhealthy desirefor life at all hazards.

If evidence were asked of the pragmatic value of Zionism as an inspiration, we Zionists need go no further than Russia, where, in spite of desperate conditions which still control, our comrades maintain a steady devotion to the future of their people.

Technical Institute at Haifa

Dr. Schmaryahu Lewin, who has devoted himself for the last few years to the promotion of the proposed Technical Institute to be established in Palestine, has left Berlin for Haifa, Palestine, in the company of a noted architect to initiate the work of constructing the buildings of the institute. This architect is the celebrated Herr Barwald, the architect of the German government, who has, among other notable buildings, recently constructed the new library of Berlin. Herr Barwald is a Jew, and owing to his interest in this undertaking, he has, by special leave of the government, undertaken to make this trip to the Orient and to design and supervise the construction of the buildings of the Institute.

Techniche Erziehung in Palastina, was recently held in Berlin. Reports were presented, showing that the undertaking is making great progress and that the promoters of the undertaking are receiving support from various influential quarters. The meeting was presided over by Herr James Simon, who is the Chairman of the Kuratorium and some of the men, who, according to the report, were present, were: Asher Ginzberg (Achad Haam), Generalkonsul Eugen Landau, Dr. S. Lewin, Professor M. Phillippson, Ludwig Schiff, Justizrat Timendorfer. It was shown that the Institute, under the above official title, has been duly incorporated under the laws of the German government, and it was announced that the declaration of the objects of the Institute were of such a broad and generally Jewish character, as to satisfy all of the promoters, who, though they may differ in their views, are agreed on the necessity and value to the Jewish cause of carrying on in the Orient such educational work as the Institute proposes.

For the site of the Institute and the necessary grounds, some 30,000 Terrains of land have been purchased in the most prominent portions of the city of Haifa and the necessary permission from the government for the construction of the buildings has been applied for. It is understood that owing to the influence of some of the men connected with the undertaking, the German government has assumed a very friendly attitude toward the scheme and that the German Embassy in Constantinople has been rendering assistance of great importance.
