Mr. Glass will do the Jews by his volume. He has crowded his effects too muchfor that. But when a Jew turns authorwe expect a certain dignity and gentleman-liness in him. Mr. Glass hasn't hurt "Abe"and "Mauruss," but he has injured hisnew profession by proving that in hiscase its ethics are lower than those of theaverage business man he satirizes."
HEBRAISM AND CIVILIZATION.
Dr. H. M. Kallen contributed to the American Hebrew of June 24th a striking article on "Judaism, Hebraism, and Zionism," enlarging upon his idea of the ethics of the Zionist movement. Dr. Kallen summed up his thesis as follows: "Up to within a century ago the Jews of the world have, as a majority, lived an ethnic national life and have expressed it in a culture which has been continually efficacious in the wider world. The real "Jewish problem," the problem of the Jewish spirit, began with the external and artificial attempt to thin Hebraism down to a mere sectional Judaism. There is every reason to believe that attempt, however well-intended, pernicious and anti-social. Reform has meant, not the purification of religion, but its destruction. True Reform moves from within, not from without. It is a growth, not a surgical operation. The masses of Jewry are untouched by reformed Judaism; the classes are alienated by it from Jewry. Reformed Judaism has signed its own death-warrant, it has cut itself off from its source of life. That source is the Jewish nation. There is no intrinsic quarrel—hysterical Zionists and rabid reformers, to the country—between Reformed Judaism and Zionism. Jewish religion is a function, an expression of nationality, and depends on nationality for life. Dr. Schechter has already pointed this out clearly enough. If Messrs. Schulman and Raisin honestly care about preserving Judaism, they can do so only by subordinating it in that larger flowering of the Jewish spirit which we call Hebraism, a flower whose roots are rare and whose soil is nationality. Zionist is the one ethical solution of the Jewish problem because, if
the past is any warrant for the future, there is every reason to believe that with the Jews as a nation, in Palestine or elsewhere, that unique note which is designated in Hebraism will assume a more sustained, a clearer and truer tone in the concert of human cultures and will genuinely enrich the harmony of civilization.'
THE ATTITUDE OF THE GALICIAN ZIONISTS.
The Hebrew monthly Haschiloach, or Odessa, which is now the official organ of the Russian Zionists, has been criticizing the Zionists of Galicia for supporting the present administration, calling our Galician comrades "Hooray-Zionists" on account of their public demonstrations, especially the one which was held on the occasion of the visit of Herr Wolffsohn. The Galician organization is also accused of wielding an autocratic rule. The Tageblatt of Lemberg, speaking for the Galician Zionists, denies the accusation of the Haschiloach and states that while the Galician Zionists supported the Russians at the congress, they found after the Congress that since Herr Wolffsohn remained the president they owed it to the cause and to party discipline to support the administration. This explanaion is generally accepted as one which shows that the Zionists of Galicia are assuming a proper attitude toward the International Organization.
