DEATH OF DR. GABEL.
The Zionist central office has announced the death of Dr. Heinrich Gabel, of Vienna. JIn him the “Jewish Club” in the Reichstrat loses its most zealous and industrious member. Dr. Gabel was born in 1873, and commenced a legal practice in Lemberg in 1902. As a student, he played a leading and influential role in the Zionist movement, and he was one of the most strenuous advocates of the idea that Jewish national interests should be represented in the political life of the countries containing a large Jewish population. When, in 1907, the Galician Zionists put forward their own candidates for election to Parliament, Dr. Gabel was elected for Buczacz. He frequently figured in the debates in defence of Jewish intersts, specially when the budget was under discussion and opportunity was provided for speeches of a general character. For the past year Dr. Gabel was vice-president of the Zionist District Committee, and president of the Austrian Jewish National League. He was a strong advocate of a union at all the Jewish communities throughout Austria. His death took place shortly after he had presided at a meeting of the National League.
CO-OPERATIVE AGRICULTURAL SETTLEMENT.
The total amount of contributions so far received for the Co-operative Agricultural Settlement projected by Dr. Oppenheimer is 40,917 marks (just over £2,000). More than a third of this has been received from Germany which has contributed 14,293 marks, whilst Austria comes next with 11,000 marks; Russia has contributed 4,849 marks, Belgium 3,600 marks, Holland 1,357 marks, Roumania 2,157 marks, Denmark 941 marks, and England 598 marks. In view of the
tremendous enthusiasm that was displayed on behalf of Dr. Oppenheimer's scheme at the Hamburg Congress the small amount that has hitherto been received for its realization is disappointing. A total of ext{
DONATION TO THE HEBREW GYMNASIUM.
Mr. Julius Ephraimsohn, of Bradford, an intimate friend of Councillor, Jacob Moser, J. P., has contributed a donation of £500 to the Hebrew Gymnasium in Jaffa in celebration of his 70th birthday.
THE PRESIDENT OF THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION.
The president of the Actions Committee of the Zionist Organization, Herr David Wolffsohn, has, upon the instructions of his medical advisers, proceeded to a sanatorium in Hamburg for a complete rest cure which will occupy from four to six weeks. Herr Wolffsohn will come to America this fall.
