The Federation Executive
The first meeting of the executive committee of the Federation was held on Thursday evening, August 8, and a number of important matters were discussed. Subsidies were voted to Dos Yiddishe Folk, $350, part of which is to be considered a loan; Young Judea, $50.00, to enable it to start its work for.the fall. Consideration was given to propaganda. The administrative .committee is engaged in forming .a plan for a systematic propaganda which is as yet unfinished. An effort will be made to bring Nahum Sokolow to this country for a two month's tour. A conference of Zionist representatives of Greater New York will be called in the near future, to establish an organization that will engage in the larger propaganda that requires united effort in the metropolis. A number of circulars to societies are in preparation and several pieces of propaganda literature are in the making. A representative was sent to the annual convention of the Order Western Star, held in Philadelphia. Zionism in Baltimore will be reorganized. The Emma Lazarus Garden City Committee is in the process of formation. The referendum for an increase of the per capita tax to 75 cents will be sent out shortly.
Dr. Magnes in Far Rockaway
An audience that filled the Masonic Temple at Far Rockaway listened to an account of “What American Jews are Doing in Palestine,’ by Dr. J. L. Magnes on August 6, under the auspices of the Zion Association and the Hadassah Chapter, Daughters of Zion of New York. The meeting was arranged by a committee on which Miss Gertrude Goldsmith and Rabbi B. Lichter were members. Dr. Magnes’ lecture was illustrated with views taken in _ Palestine by himself during his recent trip.
The views showed the progress made by the Haifa Technical Institute, the Experiment Station, the colony established by the St. Louis Hoachooza, Perea, and other interesting developments made possible by the contributions of American Jews. As a result of the meeting about twenty-five new members were affiliated with the organizations under whose auspices it was held.
Mme. Pevsner Speaks for Bezalel
Mme. Bella Pevsner addressed a meeting at Far Rockaway under the auspices of the Ladies' Auxiliary of Temple Israel on Monday evening, August 12, making a special appeal for the Bezalel School. As a result of her vivid description of the work of the institution, a number of subscriptions were made, one of $25.00 by the Ladies' Auxiliary. Mrs. Leo N. Levi has consented to act as treasurer for the subscriptions made in Far Rockaway.
Boston Tiphereth Zion Society Open Air Meetings
The Tiphereth Zionist Society of Boston has decided to further propaganda work by means of open-air meetings. The first meeting of this kind took place during the early part of August under the chairmanship of Mr. Sherman. All the Zionist societies of Boston lent their co-operation to make the meeting a success.
