Dr. Schechter Speaks at Old Orchard, Me.
Dr. Solomon Schechter, who had been visiting Old Orchard with Mrs. Schechter, addressed a large audience at the Synagogue there, on Sunday morning, August 25. The building was profusely decorated with Zionist and American flags and an enthusiastic welcome was given to the speaker.
Jewish education was the central theme of Dr. Schechter's discourse. He dwelt on the need for well-organized and efficient Hebrew schools. He then spoke of the Zionist movement, explained its meaning, and showed the influence it has had on Jewish life. Mr. David Schohet, a student at the Jewish Theological Seminary, acted as chairman and the boys and girls of the Hebrew Free School sang Zionist songs.
Hatechiyah Zionist Society of Newark
The Hatechiyah Zionist Society of Newark began its activities for the season on Sunday afternoon, September 15. The chief features of the meeting were an address by Dr. Casper Levias on "Achad Ha'am's Zionist Policy," the reading of the president's report and the election of officers for the coming year.
Great regret was felt that Mr. Leon Rosenthal, who had acted as president during two years, would have to sever his connection with the society for a time, as he is taking a course in agriculture at Cornell University. Mr. Rosenthal has taken a leading part in Newark Zionist

work since he came to this country seven years ago as a mere boy from Kishineff. His keen interest in Jewish affairs, combined with a winning personalty, and capacity for leadership have won him hosts of friends in this city. All of these will watch his college career with interest.
The following new officers were elected: President, Mr. Sylvan H. Kohn; vice-president, Miss Bertha Lewit; treasurer, Mr. Isidor Edelman; secretary, Miss Lilian Kanter.
The society may be congratulated on the fact that Miss Mollie Kaufman has again accepted the chairmanship of the committee on Junior Organization. In her capacity of chairman of that committee last season, Miss Kaufman evinced her peculiar fitness for the difficult work before her. She infected the younger people with her own enthusiasm and obtained most gratifying results.
Mr. Philip Klein was elected chairman of the National Fund Committee and Mr. Jacob Gittelman chairman of the Propaganda Committee.
The Hatechiyah Society is in existence now for five years. Its work has been and will continue to be both practical and cultural. The members will again take charge of National Fund boxes and secure subscriptions for THE MACCABAEAN. Classes in Jewish studies will again be organized.
Reception to Leon Rosenthal in Newark
The members of the Executive Committee of the Hatechiyah Society tendered a farewell reception to Mr. Leon Rosenthal, the late president of the society, who is about to leave Newark, at the home of Mr. Sylvan H. Kohn, 59 Treacy avenue, on Tuesday evening, September 17. Two volumes of Emma Lazarus' poems were presented to Mr. Rosenthal. The latter was deeply touched by the devotion of his friends and thanked them heartily for their loyalty to him.
