TO THE SPIRIT OF HERZL
Still toils o'er vast and raging seas of NightYour people's Bark, oh Spirit sweet and wise! But now it's course no longer ainless lies,For on that black and weary waste, your lightFlared forth across the darkly-scowling skies,And lo! the dreamed of Goal gleamed into sight! Then heard the Shores the Jew his shackles smiteAnd to the clouds his shout of Freedom rise!
Then died your dazzling flash.—And still the waves Rage loud about your people’s Bark.—But see! The hands that broke the chains now guide the helm; The Goal your gleam revealed allures and saves; The course is laid; your people, roused and free! Shall reach at last the sacred longed-for realm!
