Congress Delegates Report.
The Zionist Council of Greater New York has to its credit the arrangement of several successful mass-meetings within the past few months. The one held on Tuesday evening, Oct. 7th at the National Theatre, at which the American delegates to the Vienna Congress reported, was especially well attended and much enthusiasm was evinced throughout the many and various reports which were delivered.
The meeting was presided over by Rev. Masliansky and addresses were delivered by Mr. Hyman Segal, Mr. A. Goldberg, editor of Dos Yiddishe Folk and Mr. Louis Lipsky, chairman of the Executive Committee of the Federation of American Zionists.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Dr. J. L. Magnes presented a resolution condemning the action of the Russian Government in its attitude towards the Beilis "ritual-murder" trial.
Large Zionist Gathering under Hadassah Auspices.
On October 18, the Young Women's Hebrew Association auditorium was filled to overflowing by the large number of Zionists who came to hear a report of the Vienna Congress and of the Hadassah activities in Palestine. Miss Alice Seligsberg presided in the absence of Miss Szold, who was in the West.
In opening the meeting, Miss Seligsberg gave a resume of the activity of the Chapter during the summer months. The membership of the society has increased, and considerable propaganda work has
been done in other cities were Chapters have been formed.
Miss Eva Leon gave an entertaining and instructive account of what the two nurses sent to Palestine by the Chapter are doing. She spoke with great enthusiasm of the excellent service rendered by the two "Hadassahs" in the Talmud Torahs, schools annd chedarim, in combating the spread of trachoma. The nurses give their services free to maternity cases, and their settlement house is the clearing house for a great deal of communal business. They are received cordially by all institutions in Jerusalem, with whom they co-operate.
Miss Gertude Goldsmith spoke of what the Hadassah Chapter had accomplished at the Cincinnati convention of the Zionist Federation and Miss Sarah Kussy, of Newark, gave an excellent summary of the Eleventh Zionist Congress, which she had attended as a delegate.
Mr. Louis Lipsky gave an address on "Practical and Political Zionism as Reflected in the Eleventh Congress." He traced the development of Zionist thought and activity, and declared that the Eleventh Congress had settled once for all the old party differences that had divided Zionists. He declared there was no difference in principle between practical and political Zionism; that if such a difference is emphasized, it cannot be maintained in the light of the facts, and that Zionism to-day stands for a clear-cut synthesis of the national elements in practical work and the actual political requirements of the present situation, behind which stands the Basle program without equivocation.
The Chapter presented Miss Leon with a Bible, as a token of its appreciation of her work in Jerusalem.
