One day, standing by one of the large Synagogues, I fell into conversation with a fresh colored, apple-faced, little, alert, old Jew, in a gray suit who had just come out of the Synagogue. He was from the West of England, had left his lucrative business in the hands of his sons and had come to Jerusalem, he cheerily told me, 'to end his days' which had already passed the Psalmist's 'span.' Had I come, too? he asked me. No. I had come to study the architecture and the people and their ways.

Nowhere is any other mention made of the Jews in modern Palestine, except only to tell of their poverty in Jerusalem, and of Tnolich affarts tn ameliorate their candition. IF S

"Hebraism un Yiddishism," by AB. GOLDBERG, Zionist Organization of America.

MR. AB. GOLDBERG, well-known in his writings and addresses for sponsoring the movement for the revival of the Hebrew language, has just given us a worthy apologia for his ideal, in a comprehensive discussion of the views held by the "Hebraists" and "Yiddishists" on the question of the Jewish "National" language. Of course, Mr. Goldberg is a "Hebraist"; but this fact did not prevent him from coolly and rationally dealing with his opponents' views, and treating them as dispassionately as is compatible with logical dignity and appreciation of facts.

In his "Hebraism un Yiddishism," although he mentions no names, the author treats especially of the new-fangled arguments of Dr. Zhitlowsky and his confrères to the effect that the Hebrew movement is "assimilatory in its tendencies," "undemocratic," "reactionary," etc.—arguments which, to say the least, savor of the demogogic. He refutes these arguments, as well as those of "longer standing," that Hebrew is a limited medium of expression, and, therefore, tends to hamper thought.

Mr. Goldberg also takes up the claims of the "Yiddishists" for the recognition of the Jewish vernacular as the "national" language of the Jewish people. He concedes, however, to the "Yiddishists" that the vernacular has for several hundred years been part and parcel of the national existence of the greater part of the Jewish people, and has been a powerful preventive against assimilation; but, nevertheless, he denies it "national rights," averring that the Jews during many periods of their history have indulged in various dialects, which they Judaized for their purposes, and later abandoned.

“Hebraism un Yiddishism” is a valuable contribution to the wrangle on the “linguistic sovereignty,” which in late years has produced a good deal of bad blood among Jewish factions, and which still has a “promising future” in Palestine. It is, therefore, the duty of every nationalistic Jew, who still wavers on this question, to become familiarized with this unpleasant but inevitable controversy. Jewish public opinion cannot afford to be indifferent to it; Mr. Goldberg’s pamphlet will help formulate public opinion. A.S.O.
